World Land Rover Day

World Land Rover Day

30th April 2018 will mark 70 years since Land Rover made its debut!

There are to be celebrations around the word today, 30 April 2018, to mark the 70 years since the very first Land Rover was presented at the 1948 Amsterdam Motor Show. The idea of the Land Rover was the brainchild of Rover's then engineering director Maurice Wilks, who drew the outline of his innovation in the sand of Red Wharf Bay, near to his farm in Anglesey, during a visit from his brother Spencer, who also worked at Rover. As the first prototype he built was aimed at the farming community, Wilks originially put the steering wheel in the centre. But that made it difficult to give hand signals and to manoeuvre, sitting lower in a car as opposed to high up in a tractor, so Wilks switched to a left or right hand drive. The pair named the new vehicle the Land Rover.

Since then the Land Rover brand has gone from strength to strength and is now the world leader in all-terrain and luxury vehicles. 3 cheers for Land Rover!
