All models gain a numbered plaque on the B-pillar, marking out its limited status. In addition, full LED headlights, a removable towbar, contrast roof and wing mirrors all come as standard.

There’s also a new body colour on offer – the eye-catching Turmeric Yellow.

Inside, the cab has VW’s Discover Media Navigation Pro infotainment system, plus heated seats, cruise control and all-round parking sensors.

The anniversary edition of the campervan comes with a choice of diesel engines, offering 148bhp or 197bhp.

Both are mated to a seven-speed DSG gearbox, and the latter is available with 4Motion four-wheel drive as an option.

Fuel economy ranges from 41.5mpg to 38.7mpg as you climb the range, with CO2 emissions of 179g/km to 224g/km.

The California 30 Years costs from £64,307 for the entry-level 148bhp unit, rising to £70,629 for the range-topping 197bhp model with four-wheel drive.

Although Volkswagen campervans have been around in one form or another since the 1950s, 1988 saw the introduction of the first Volkswagen-approved conversion.

The original California was based on the rear-engined T3 Transporter and built by Westfalia.

Since 2004, Volkswagen itself has been responsible for the California conversions at a dedicated factory in Limmer, Germany.

The latest T6 model sold 15,155 units worldwide in 2017.

In addition to the special edition version and travel guide a mural has also been comissioned in London. Created by artist Jo Hicks the mural is inspoired by some of the most iconic locations around the UK.

Sarah Cox the Head of Marketing at Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles said:

“The Volkswagen California is one of the most iconic models on the road and has been the campervan of choice for so many families holidaying in the UK over the past 30 years. As well as our limited edition model, we’re marking the anniversary with our unique travel guide so owners can get the most out of their holidays and explore some of the nation’s hidden gems.

“The mural is an outstanding piece of artwork which really encapsulates everything the Volkswagen California is about and is the ideal way to mark a very special birthday.”
