Electric coupe-SUV to debut at all-new venue for flagship German show
Germany’s biggest car manufacturer, Volkswagen, is set to reveal a disguised prototype of its new ID.5 GTX electric vehicle at the IAA Munich Motor Show next month. The ID.5 will be the third vehicle in the electric-only ID family, after the ID.3 hatchback and ID.4 crossover. The production version will be a hybrid of coupé and SUV styling, with a sleek profile and sloping rear.
It will be based on the MEB electric vehicle platform already found in most of the Volkswagen Group’s electric models. The pre-production model will retain a partial disguise, but will have Matrix LED headlights with a light strip that passes through the VW logo, while the headlights themselves have a honeycomb design.
At the rear there’s a similar light bar across the whole width of the vehicle, with 3D effect tail lights and a rear spoiler. For the prototype, the powertrain is a dual motor system, with a motor on both axles that provides all-wheel-drive. It has a 77kWh battery that should have a range of over 300 miles. Expect to see a production-ready ID.5 GTX early next year as part of Volkswagen’s aim to have 70 per cent of its new car sales being pure battery-electric by 2050
