Topping the range, the Touareg R comes with a turbocharged V6 petrol alongside an electric motor

Volkswagen has taken the covers off the range-topping version of the Touareg.

Called the Touareg R, it’s fitted with a V6 turbocharged petrol engine paired to an electric motor and 14.1kWh battery that combine to produce 455bhp and 700Nm of torque.

But like other R-labelled Volkswagen models, the Touareg comes with performance in mind, and the first plug-in hybrid R model comes with an eight-speed automatic transmission sending the power to all four wheels and the 4Motion all-wheel drive setup.

Although the all-electric range hasn’t been confirmed, Volkswagen has said it can do up to 87mph on electric power alone and it will cover ‘typical commuter distances on zero emissions’ – so expect a range in excess of 30 miles.

Drivers will be able to choose from driving modes depending on what they need. Hybrid and the all-electric E-Mode will be offered alongside Eco, Comfort, Normal, Sport and Individual modes – while Gravel and Sand modes can be added with the optional off-road package.

Inside, customers will have a 12-inch digital instrument display and a 15-inch infotainment touchscreen at their disposal, while the black leather upholstery will be trimmed with ‘Crystal Grey’ decorative stitching. The Touareg R is also the only plug-in hybrid SUV with trailer assist.

Set to go on sale in the second half of 2020, the Touareg R will make its debut at the 2020 Geneva Motor Show next week.
