Volkswagen has announced it will now be offering all-electric conversions for its classic campervan models – while also revealing the e-Bulli concept to showcase the technology.

Partnering with EV conversion specialists eClassics, the German firm is offering T1 conversions alongside complete vehicles based on VW’s electric vehicle platform.

Based on a 1966 version of the T1 Samba Bus, the e-Bulli comes with an 82bhp electric motor – double the output of the standard petrol engine – that develops 212Nm of torque.

All the power is fed through a single-speed transmission, with the top speed set at 81mph.

The 45kWh battery used allows for more than 125 miles of range.

With the battery pack able to be charged to 80 per cent in just 40 minutes when plugged into a 50kW fast charger.

To allow for a better drive and have a more modern setup, multi-link front and rear axles have been added alongside adjustable shock absorbers and a new steering system.

The majority of the exterior design remains the same with an orange and white paint job, but round LED headlights have been fitted. Inside, the two-tone theme continues, while a wood-effect floor has been included for a ‘maritime’ feel.

The cockpit also includes a digital speedometer display, an automatic transmission gear stick between the front seats and smartphone integration.

UK prices have yet to be confirmed, but European prices start from €64,900 (around £59,200).

Anyone else as excited as we are?
