BMW X5 tops list of most commonly clocked cars

Analysis of over 2.5 million vehicles has revealed the most commonly ‘clocked’ cars in the UK — with the BMW X5 topping the list.

Clocking is when the mileage of a car is altered to make it appear as if the vehicle has covered less distance than reality, in order to boost its resale value.

Vehicle history checking firm Rapid Car Check assessed data of the Government’s MOT database, revealed 160,430 cars had mileage discrepancies.

BMW’s X5 looks to be the most commonly affected car, with 11.71 per cent of 7,531 examples showing discrepancies. Following that is the Vauxhall Vectra with 11.58 per cent, and then the Peugeot 206 at 11.38 per cent.

In November, research from Cap HPI estimate around 2.3 million cars in the UK have mileage discrepancies.

It’s not just passenger cars that are affected by this issue, however. Further analysis by Rapid Car Check found 12.99 per cent of Ford Transits to have mileage issues, along with 6,507 Vauxhall Combo vans.
