A new year means plenty of new cars and 4x4s are the flavour of 2020. Here’s what we’ve got to look forward to this year. Read on to discover style, space and capability!

What’s new for 2020?

SUVs and 4x4s seem to be taking over on the UK roads. It’s hardly surprising, with many people preferring the higher riding position, additional space and great capability that a 4x4 provides. And with the huge range of sizes and prices, there’s a 4x4 to suit everyone.

As drivers appreciate the many benefits of 4x4s, every manufacturer wants to get in on the act, expanding their range or revamping older models, which means that we’ll be seeing lots of new 4x4s in 2020, including daring new electric or hybrid models.

Let’s take a look at some of the new 4x4s due on the market in the coming year, giving us something to look forward to in 2020 and beyond…

Audi e-tron Sportback

Built to compete with the likes of the Mercedes GLE PHEV, the BMW X4 plug-in and Jaguar’s electric I-PACE, the Audi e-tron Sportback will be powered by 2 electric motors (one over each axle). The powertrain of this classy coupé-style new 4x4 is expected to produce around 496 bhp (combined) along with up to 240 miles on a single charge of the battery.

Digital Matrix Lights (DMLs) will light up the road ahead to help you to stick to the right path while animations can be beamed onto your driveway or garage door to assist with parking. If you like a firm suspension, you’ll love this great-looking new addition to the Audi range.

Audi Q4 e-tron

For a more affordable and compact new 4x4 from the Audi e-tron range, look out for the Audi Q4 e-tron. While it might be smaller in size (under 4.6m long) than it’s bigger, Sportback brother, the Q4 e-tron still has attention-grabbing looks with quirky gadgetry, such as optional wing cameras that replace traditional wing mirrors.

A range of 280 miles and power of over 300 bhp will make the new Audi Q4 e-tron more than capable around town and further afield. Due at the end of 2020, the Audi Q4 e-Tron is anticipated to give the Tesla Model Y a run for its money as it’s expected to be more competitively priced.

CUPRA Formentor

SEAT’s performance brand, CUPRA is set to launch its first exclusive model in 2020. Christened the Formentor, this coupé-SUV is based on SEAT’s successful Ateca with a lower roof, sportier looks and sleeker lines.

CUPRA’s performance branding dictates that the new 4x4 Formentor must have plenty of power which comes in the form of a plug-in hybrid capable of 242 bhp in conjunction with a 1.4-litre or a 296 bhp 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine. You can expect a more economic, less powerful SEAT-badged version to be revealed towards the end of the year.

NEW Land Rover Defender

Tougher than ever, the new Land Rover Defender will be equally at home in any condition - thanks to the clever Terrain Response system. Although it retains much of the same character of the iconic Defender, such as the alpine lights that brighten the cabin, the new version is expected to be more refined with increased comfort.

Land Rover claims that the new 4x4 Defender is the most intuitive to date when it comes to visibility, connectivity and convenience. With a wide range of accessory packs and optional extras, and an enviable range of engines - 2.0-litre petrol and diesel options as well as a 3.0-litre 400 bhp alternative - you’ll be spoilt for choice.

Volkswagen ID. Crozz

Volkwagen will increase its electric car portfolio to include an impressive coupé SUV this year with the VW ID. Crozz. All-wheel-drive will ensure excellent handleability with an electric range of up to 500 miles (model dependent) while 2 electric engines will provide over 300 bhp.

VW claims that anything is possible in the ID. Crozz, on or off-road, with a spacious interior and advanced technology that responds to your voice. One touch of the steering wheel or Bluetooth command and the ID. pilot takes control to allow you to enjoy the exceptionally flexible interior of this new 4x4, thanks to the removal of the B-pillars and adjustable rear seats and centre console.
