Volkswagen has been pushing hard to expand its EV offerings, with its ID-badged line-up of cars growing by the month. These days, there are three core offerings - the ID.3, ID.4 and the new ID.5, with all three offering something slightly different but sharing similar powertrains and charging capacities.
But what do you need to know about each one? We’ve got all of the information you need below.
ID.3
The ID.3 was the car that sparked Volkswagen’s electric offensive. The German firm put it alongside both the Golf and the Beetle in terms of importance, so you can understand why it brimmed the ID.3 with features and technology. It sits on a dedicated electric car platform too, called MEB, which grants the ID.3 more interior space than a conventional combustion-engined car.
It’s offered with a variety of different motor and battery options, with the line-up kicking off with a 45kWh, 148bhp version. Even this will return a still-respectable 217 miles from a single charge and offer a 0-60mph time of 8.7 seconds. Plus, because it’s able to charge at speeds of up to 100kW, 137 miles of range can be added in as little as 30 minutes.
There’s also a 58kWh variant offering up to 263 miles of range and a more powerful 201bhp electric motor, while a range-topping Tour model is equipped with a much larger 77kWh battery, capable of delivering up to 340 miles of range. The latter is easily the best option for those who want to take their ID.3 on long-distance trips.
ID.4
Volkswagen expanded its electric car line-up with the ID.4. It’s a larger and more practicality-focused option over the ID.3, bringing with it a roomier boot and an increased amount of interior space. It boasts the same high level of technology and equipment though, with a large infotainment screen controlling all of the car’s major functions. The 543-litre boot is usefully large, too, and is particularly impressive given that the car’s batteries are located underneath. It’s another benefit of a dedicated electric car platform.
In terms of powertrains, things start with a 52kWh version bringing 213 miles of range. Despite being the entry point to the ID.4 line-up, it still offers a lot of range and performance. There’s also a 77kWh version which brings up to 320 miles of range between charges.
At the top of the ID.4 line-up sits the GTX. This is effectively the sportiest option available as you get a dual-motor setup with 295bhp capable of sending the car from 0-60mph in six seconds. Despite being the most powerful ID.4 available, it’s still able to return up to 301 miles between top-ups and can be charged to 80 per cent in as little as 38 minutes courtesy of 125kW charging capabilities.
ID.5
The new ID.5 was only recently announced but expands the line-up even further. Essentially, it’s a more coupe-esque version of the ID.4, with a raked roofline and sharper boot giving it a more distinctive look. From launch, it’ll be offered with two outputs but the same 77kWh battery bringing a total range of over 310 miles. As with the ID.4, the ID.5 boasts a charging speed of up to 135kW, meaning that an 80 per cent charge can be conducted in around 30 minutes at an appropriate charger.
The ID.5 is also fitted with some of Volkswagen’s latest software, which not only aids charging performance but also gives the car access to ‘swam’ data which allows it to communicate with other vehicles and notify them about oncoming hazards. As with the ID.4, there’s a range-topping GTX model with a dual-motor setup.
