Volkswagen has added a more practical estate version to its Golf R line-up with the same sporty styling and engine as the Golf R hatchback.

Volkswagen has added a more practical estate version to its flagship Golf R line-up. Benefiting from the same sporty styling and engine as the Golf R hot hatchback, it’s the most powerful version of this wagon yet. Featuring a turbocharged 2.0-litre petrol under the bonnet, it develops 316bhp and 420Nm of torque, which is 20bhp and 20Nm more than before. With its speed limiter removed as part of an optional package, the R Estate can reach a top speed of 167mph, along with 0-60mph in just 4.7 seconds.

Like its predecessor, a seven-speed DSG automatic gearbox is used, with power being delivered to all wheels. This four-wheel-drive system is also able to split power between individual wheels, which aims to improve agility. An R Performance Package is also on offer, which includes optional modes for track driving – most notably a ‘Drift’ mode that enables slides through the corners. It also features a sports suspension setup, which sits 20mm lower than the regular Golf Estate

To set it aside from the standard car, it gets sportier styling throughout, including most notably with its quad-exit exhaust system and gloss black rear diffuser. Inside, it also gets sports seats and a performance steering wheel, as well as a large digital dial and touchscreen display, as seen across the full Golf line-up. First deliveries of the new Golf R Estate are expected before the end of the year, with prices likely to start north of £40,000.
