The Audi line-up is one packed with high-quality and premium-feeling models. Both the A4 and A6 occupy hotly contested segments too, but have consistently delivered over the years to become firm favourites among buyers.

Both cars have recently entered into new generations, bringing in more technology and features than ever. With the latest engines, they’re more efficient than their predecessors, too. Here, we’re going to take a look at the features which both cars offer.

Design

Audi A4

Both the A4 and A6 showcase the very latest in Audi’s design language. The Audi A4, which sits in the compact executive segment, manages to give the appearance of a much larger car yet while maintaining a relatively compact size. The headlights are sharp and have LED technology, while around the back there are similarly slim lights. There’s the option of having chrome or gloss black finishers around key areas such as the windows, too.

Audi A6

Step up to the larger Audi A6 and you’ll find the A4’s design applied to a much larger canvas. Despite being quite a big car, the A6’s sculpted body panels and sharp edges hide this additional bulk well. The grille is even larger than before, too.

Interior

Audi A4 Interior

Audi has an excellent reputation when it comes to cabin quality. That’s certainly the case when it comes to the A6, where you’ll find plenty of high-end materials used throughout. The A6 also does well in terms of visibility, with decent sight lines out of the front, rear and over the shoulder.

It’s much the same story in the A4. Somewhat cosier than the larger A6, the A4’s cabin still manages to provide plenty of space with all manner of cubbies dotted throughout the cabin to help keep it tidy.

Technology

A6 Technology

As mentioned, the A4 and A6 both benefit from plenty of high-end technology. All A4s get a 10.1-inch infotainment screen in the middle of the cabin, which houses media and navigation as well as smartphone connectivity options. There’s also Audi’s clever Virtual Cockpit systems, which replaces the conventional dials with a customisable screen.

The A6 adopts a slightly different layout. So as well as a large central screen, it also uses a secondary display lower down which controls the heating and ventilation systems. It’s a really impressive system to look at and is easy to use, too. The A6 also benefits from the Virtual Cockpit system, too.

Boot

If outright boot space is what you’re after then the A6 will be the car you’ll naturally gravitate towards. In the saloon, there’s 530 litres of space on offer, but if you need more space then the Estate version’s 586 litres that’ll appeal and this can be extended up to 1,680 litres by folding the rear seats down.

The A4, meanwhile, offers a still respectable 480 litres of boot space in the saloon, rising to 495 litres in the estate - extendable to 1,495 litres with the seats down.

Engines

There are plenty of engine options available with both cars here. With the A4, the range is centred around 2.0-litre petrol and diesel variants, going from 148bhp right the way up to 201bhp. All cars come with Audi’s S tronic automatic gearbox, too. There’s then the 3.0-litre turbocharged diesel-powered S4 and the range-topping RS4 which packs 444bhp from its 2.9-litre twin-turbocharged V6.

Much like the A4, there are plenty of options when it comes to the A6’s engines. Even the lowest-powered 2.0-litre models still push out over 200bhp, while 3.0-litre variants offer 286bhp. There’s also a plug-in hybrid variant, which combines a 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine with an electric motor and battery. Offering up to 30 miles of electric-only running, it’s a very efficient choice. The powerful S6 uses a twin-turbocharged 3.0-litre diesel, while performance enthusiasts will enjoy the tip-top RS6 brings some serious power with a turbocharged 4.0-litre V8.
