Lower-priced plug-in hybrid VW Golf now open to order

The popular hatchback has gained a new fleet-friendly electrified model.

Volkswagen has lowered the price of entry for its Golf plug-in hybrid models with a new variant aimed at company car buyers.

Called eHybrid Style, the lower-priced model is targeted at fleet buyers thanks to its low benefit-in-kind rating of just seven per cent. However, the firm hopes the lower price will also make it appealing to private buyers.

It heavily undercuts the existing £36,010 GTE model, costing from £32,995. It uses a 1.4-litre petrol engine and electric motor, with a battery that allows it to travel up to 44 miles on electric alone.

The combined power output is 201bhp and 350Nm of torque, while the 0-60mph time is 7.4 seconds. It’s the economy that’s key to this model, though, registering 235mpg and CO2 emissions of just 21g/km.

Although its selling point is a reduced price it still has a decent level of equipment, including digital instruments, satellite navigation, leather steering wheel, sports seats and adaptive cruise control. For the exterior, there are LED headlights and taillights, as well as 16-inch alloy wheels.

Volkswagen UK’s head of fleet Nick O’Neill said: “The Volkswagen Golf has always been a staple of the UK fleet sector and now, with the arrival of this exciting new plug-in hybrid option, I am sure we will see more companies taking the decision to add our exceptional new car to their fleets.”
