PSA Group vehicles are now certified to the more realistic WLTP fuel economy standard

PSA Group has announced that all Peugeot, Citroën, DS and Vauxhall vehicles are now certified to WLTP fuel economy regulations.

WLTP, or Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicle Test Procedure, is the latest system of classifying vehicles’ fuel economy, and will theoretically provide more realistic data thanks to a longer and more rigorous testing route. All new cars registered from September 1 must be certified to this standard.

All four manufacturers were ahead of the curve, with Vauxhall publishing WLTP-standard figures on its cars as early as 2016. Peugeot and Citroen have been reporting figures according to a similar but independent standard, developed by the third-party Transport & Environment organisation. Throughout the process the group has published so-called real-world fuel consumption and emissions figures for more than 1,000 models.

The group attributes its early adoption of WLTP to sound technological choices and continued investment made in anticipation of the regulations. Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) and Gasoline Particulate Filter (GPF) systems all contribute to improved fuel economy and reduced emissions.

The next step for PSA, and indeed for car manufacturing as a whole, will be Euro 6d-Temp emissions regulations. These come into force in September 2019 and take into account real-world pollutant emissions for the first time.

Gilles Le Borgne, executive vice president for quality and engineering at PSA Group, said: “Our technological choices to treat pollutant emissions – such as SCR for all diesel engines launched in 2013, and, more recently, the GPF for gasoline engines with direct injection – allow us to offer to our customers compliant and environmentally friendly vehicles, and to keep our leadership on reducing emissions.”
