Petrol, Diesel, Hybrid & Electric Cars - which is the best fuel for your car?

In recent years, buying a car has become a lot more interesting, with so many different makes and models to choose from, and a huge variety of optional extras that allowing you to tailor your car to your needs.

Manufacturers are also discovering more and more ways to improve cars, including more economical and less polluting ways to power them: petrol, diesel, hybrid or electric car - which is the best fuel for your car?


Diesel engines are now built to be cleaner and more efficient than ever. They’ve always had lower CO2 emissions than equivalent petrol vehicles, with filters now catching close to 100% of emission particles. The DPF requires regular long trips to burn off the captured particles so diesel cars are best suited to those with high mileage.

Pros of Diesel Engines:
  • Great torque for off-roading and towing
  • Excellent mpg for long distance driving
  • Lower CO2 emissions than petrol engines
  • Slower depreciation than petrol, diesel engines often last longer
Cons of Diesel Engines:
  • More expensive than petrol at the fuel pumps
  • Higher initial road tax payments
  • Often higher insurance than petrol
  • Sometimes more expensive to repair than petrol


Improved petrol engines now offer better fuel consumption than ever before. A quieter, lighter engine might mean a more pleasant drive for some, but you’ll almost definitely notice easier handling and faster acceleration than with a diesel. For a smaller, more nippy car, you’ll find that petrol cars will probably be your first choice.

Cons of Petrol Engines:
  • Doesn’t hold value as well as diesel or electric
  • Less economical than diesel or electric
  • Faster depreciation than diesel or electric


Combining the best of both alternative and combustion engines, hybrid technology seamlessly utilises electric for short trips and (usually) petrol for longer journeys. Available as plug-in or self-generating, if you want to drive with lower emissions without worrying about access to electric charging points, a hybrid car could be the way to go.

  • Low road tax
  • No congestion charges
  • Reliable - no range limit
Cons of Hybrid Engines:
  • More expensive than petrol or diesel
  • Batteries are expensive to replace
  • Plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) require charging point
  • Less pulling power than petrol or diesel

Cons of Electric Vehicles:
  • Expensive to buy
  • Heavy, therefore less efficient at higher speeds
  • Limited range
  • Extensive time to recharge
  • Scarcity of recharging points
  • Danger to pedestrians of silent approach
