What are differences between Volkswagen’s Passat, CC and new Arteon?
Volkswagen is offering something new and exciting for 2017 – the new Volkswagen Arteon. It’s effectively replacing the CC, which in past years has competed with the BMW 4 Series Gran Turismo.
The styling of this new hatchback is reminiscent of the Sport Coupé Concept GTE premiered in Geneva in 2015 and price-wise, it’s positioned to sell at a point just above that of the Volkswagen Passat. Interesting news for those who find the smaller saloon excellent value but want a little more more luxury.
So what’s the price tag for this new Volkswagen? The lowest trim is expected to be around £34,305, rising to around £40,000 for a top-of-the-line VW Arteon with all of the trimmings. While more expensive than the Passat and the CC, the Arteon allows Volkswagen to compete better in the luxury car market.
The 2017 Volkswagen Arteon vs Volkswagen Passat
While the new VW Arteon range does have similar engines as the VW Passat collection, and some commonalities with chassis and interiors, the Arteon is designed to have a slightly longer wheelbase, which means that buyers are afforded a bigger back seat and more cargo space.
The Arteon is built on the tried-and-true MQB platform that Volkswagen made famous. Those choosing an Arteon over the Passat will be rewarded with a 2.0-litre twin-turbocharged direct-injection BiTDI SCR diesel engine, which produces 240 PS and 369 lb/ft of torque.
With the BiTDI, the new fastback is capable of going from zero to 62mph in six-and-a-half seconds and can reach a top speed of 152 mph where a private speed track would allow. One might expect a car delivering those kinds of numbers to be costly at the pump, but fuel costs should be reasonable with the Arteon claiming up to 47.9 mpg (combined)*.
Choosing the Elegance trim gets you LED rear lights, chrome door mirror caps, chrome strip on the lower bodywork, heated windscreen wiper jets, 18-inch aluminium-alloy wheels, heated leather seats, aluminium-look pedal covers and contrast stitching on the seats.
Under the Bonnet
The engine in the VW Arteon is transversely mounted, which allows power to be directed to the front-wheels efficiently and effectively. The models with larger engines will come standard with an upgraded version of the 4Motion four-wheel drive system.
In total, Volkswagen offers the Arteon with a choice of three petrol and four diesel turbocharged injection engines. The petrol engines come in the form of a 1.5-litre 150PS, a 2.0-litre 190PS and a 2.0-litre 280PS 4MOTION. Aside from the 2.0-litre BiTDI 240PS 4MOTION already mentioned, diesel engines will also be represented by three further 2.0-litre options at 150PS, 190PS and 190PS 4MOTION.
The 1.5-litre petrol engine and the two smaller diesel engines will have a six-speed manual gearbox as standard, with the two larger petrol engines and 4MOTION diesel engines (190PS and 240PS) boasting a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.
A Higher Class of Volkswagen
As far as the design of the car goes, all credit can be given to Klaus Bischoff, head of design at Volkswagen. In styling the Arteon, he is quoted as saying that he believes it to be the start of a new design era. It’s definitely a new look for VW!
The Arteon is a clear departure from all the other designs in the Volkswagen line-up. While the basic bones of the car might echo the Sport Coupé Concept GTE, there have been obvious modifications to the pronounced front grille. The concept car ideas are also present in the clamshell hood, wheel arches, fastback tailgate, air duct designs, rear lights, and exhaust pipes.
The sportier version of the Arteon, the R-line, takes the design a step further with chrome accents, 19-inch alloy wheels, special bumpers, and high gloss black air intakes.
The base version of the VW Arteon will not only be a treat for the eyes but also be packed with features. The vehicle comes with a long list of standard features that would usually be classed as additional extras: LED lights, heated seats, 18-inch alloy wheels, an adjustable driver’s seat with lumbar support, tinted windows, park distance control, a charging port, thee-zone air conditioning, 8-inch ‘Discover Media’ infotainment system, two USB points, eight speakers, a spare wheel, Side Assist Plus… and so much more!
And if you thought that was enough, wait til you see what’s on offer in the Elegance trim: voice control, backup camera, and luxury fabrics. The R-line brings a lot of bling to the table as well, with Alcantara leather sport seat covers, 19-inch alloy wheels, active info display, dynamic light assist, titanium black headliner and ambient lighting.
Inside, the Tale Continues
Despite the sleek look of the interior, comfort isn’t sacrificed for style. The Arteon is longer, wider, and taller than its predecessor, the CC. The cabin is a definite upgrade from the Passat, but it loses nothing of the smaller vehicle’s efficiency and organisation.
There are numerous high-end options that can be included straight from the factory, and a HD Active Info Display is available in lieu of traditional dials. Materials include striated wood dash inserts and high-grade plastics that merge seamlessly. The seats are comfortable and can be adjusted to accommodate almost any height. Cargo and storage space are more generous with the VW Arteon than with any other vehicle in its class.
Whether your concern is good looks, safety, or both, the VW Arteon performs well in all respects. It includes features not found on the Passat and CC like limited self-driving, sat nav-guided headlights, and dynamic braking – features that are usual on luxury vehicles.
It also introduces a few new ideas as well. One of these is an improved version of Volkswagen’s Emergency Assist System that not only automatically stops the car when it senses that the driver is unable to do so, but also directs the vehicle to change lanes to avoid an impending collision.
In short, the Arteon is a vehicle that appeals to both the heart and the mind, a feat that is virtually unheard of in the automotive industry. For those who are already fans of the CC or the Passat, the Arteon is sure to be a breath of fresh air and the next need-to-own vehicle.
