Trim Levels of the new Golf 8 Estate

It also arrives with a streamlined trim selection, giving buyers a clearer idea of the specifications available. From launch, there will be just three - Life, Style and R-Line.

As with the previous Golf, an Alltrack version will also be available, bringing a powerful diesel engine and all-wheel-drive for added capability in slippery conditions. Linked to a seven-speed gearbox, the Alltrack receives chunky exterior looks and an illuminated front grille, while prices for this model start from £35,560.

When it comes to standard trim levels, however, things kick off with Life. This trim brings LED headlights, 16-inch alloy wheels and a full satellite navigation system - among other features. It also benefits from Volkswagen’s Digital Cockpit system, which puts a configurable display ahead of the driver in place of the standard dials.

One up from this comes Style. Priced from £26,755, this adds 17-inch alloy wheels and a range of assistance systems including lane change assist, side assist and traffic jam assist. Three-zone climate control is also added with this spec.

Finally, R-Line cars get 17-inch alloy wheels and a sports bodykit with redesigned front and rear bumpers. Tinted glass is also included, while sports suspension gives the car a lower, more dynamic appearance on the road. Prices for R-Line-specification cars start from £28,075.

Engines

A range of engines will be available with the new Golf Estate, starting with a turbocharged 1.0-litre petrol engine linked to a six-speed manual. A mild-hybrid version of this engine will also enter into the range, albeit driven though an automatic gearbox instead.

Other engine choices include a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol in one of two power outputs, alongside a 2.0-litre turbocharged diesel engine bringing 148bhp.
