New A5 Coupe and Sportback models
Swansway Audi is proud to reveal details of the New A5 Coupe and Sportback models now on show at all six of our dealerships across The Midlands and The North West
Promising more interior space than their predecessors, the two cars were unveiled seven years after these highly successful originals, and also offer significant improvements in power and fuel consumption.
New safety enhancements, such as the pre-sense city feature, which can stop the car from up to 24mph if it senses an impending collision, are included, and have helped the car achieve a five-star EuroNCAP safety rating. Turn assist monitors also help prevent another major cause of collisions, by sensing when the car is turning into oncoming traffic and stopping it completely if necessary.
The five-door coupe is slightly longer than the model it replaces, while the front grille is noticeably flatter and wider.
Every four-cylinder engine in the range, petrol TFSI and diesel TDI models, is available with the famous quattro all-wheel drive.
‘S’ really does stand for special!
Topping out the range, as usual with Audi, is a model with an ‘S’ prefix – and in the S5, that truly does mean ‘special’. This flagship model features a V6 TFSI engine with 354PS and 500Nm which is 85kg lighter than its predecessor.
Interior space has grown slightly, with Audi saying that is particularly apparent around shoulder level, and for rear passengers, in extra space around their knees.
The A5 Sportback also has room for 480 litres of luggage. Split 40:20:40 rear seats allow the rear space to be configured in a variety of ways, and for that capacity to be expanded to as much as 1,300 litres.
Audi can’t afford to stand still in the realm of in-car infotainment, and its latest flagship ‘virtual cockpit’ system fitted to the new A5 includes 10GB of storage, with all information displayed on a high-res 12.3-inch screen, ensures that hasn’t happened. There’s even an optional head-up display which projects vital information onto the A5’s windscreen, removing the need for the driver to take their eyes off the road.
Next generation safety features
Audi’s take on the next generation of autonomous driving also appears in the A5. The adaptive cruise control features traffic jam assist, which enables the car to brake and accelerate automatically in stop-start traffic at speeds up to 40mph.
Collision avoidance assist can also automatically steer the car around an obstacle, projecting a driving line in a fraction of a second, claims the manufacturer.
The body of the new Audi A5 Sportback is the lightest in the segment, weighing in at 15 kilograms lighter than its predecessor. The overall weight of the new generation has fallen by as much as 85 kilograms to just 1,470 kilograms, excluding the driver.
Audi offers the model with an upgraded list of standard equipment that includes a wide range of extra functions. These include xenon headlights with LED daytime running lights and LED rear lights, Audi MMI radio plus with a seven-inch colour display, Bluetooth, a three-spoke leather multifunction steering wheel (including shift paddles in models with automatic transmission), front centre armrest, and LED interior lighting. Also standard are the Audi drive select dynamic handling system, and a variable speed limiter.
The previous incarnation of the A5 stayed in production for seven years, in which time it racked up 340,000 worldwide sales.
Given the speed of technological advancements, whether the new model will last as long remains to be seen – but there’s plenty to entice the A5’s existing customer base, while also reaching out to buyers looking for a top-notch mix of refinement and performance.
