Key things to know about the Volkswagen Transporter

Volkswagen’s Transporter is one of the firm’s best-known commercial vehicles. With an impressively car-like driving experience, it’s a van which is as easy to live with as it is versatile. With a large load area and a strong diesel powertrain powering the whole affair, the Transporter is seen as a reliable workhorse in the segment.

And with a new one now available, the Transporter has even more to offer. Let’s take a look at what’s under the skin.

There’s just one engine to choose from

Though the Transporter used to be available with a series of petrol engines, it now only gets diesel powertrains. That’s no bad thing, mind you, as they’re particularly well-suited to the Transporter’s requirements.

The 2.0-litre unit is available in a series of different powertrains - 89, 108, 148 and 196bhp - and there’s the option of either a manual or DSG dual-clutch automatic gearbox too. In addition, you can add Volkswagen’s 4Motion four-wheel-drive system for added traction.

There’s plenty of space inside

Of course, a van needs to be spacious. Fortunately, the Transporter has this box ticked thanks to a maximum load length of 2,975mm and a full load width of 1,700mm. It’ll also manage a 1,309kg maximum payload, meaning that it’s got more than enough in the tank for most jobs.

The new Transporter is available in two wheelbase lengths, allowing you to better tailor it to your needs.

Plenty of assistance systems come fitted as standard

When it comes to safety the new Transporter really excels itself. It’s fitted with all manner of assistance systems designed to ensure that you get where you need to be as safely as possible. Features such as front assist with city emergency braking come alongside lane keep assist, crosswind assist and additional side protection.

Park assist also helps when parking the car and trailer assist takes the sting out of towing too.

Two trim levels offer plenty of standard equipment

Though just two specifications are available with the new Transporter, there’s no need to be concerned about the level of standard equipment on offer. In fact, even base trim Startline vans benefit from cruise control, a leather multifunction steering wheel and digital radio.

Move up to Highline and you’ll find air conditioning and body-coloured bumpers added - among other features.

There are two infotainment choices

You’re not going to be left wanting for technology in the new Transporter. It packs a 6.5-inch colour touchscreen as standard and this houses DAB radio and - importantly for smartphone users - both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Upgrade to the Discover Media setup and you’ll find that screen boosted to an 8.0-inch version and it’s accompanied by a full satellite navigation system as well as voice controls and 32GB of on-board storage for media.
