The new ID.4 performed impressively in the renowned Euro NCAP (European New Car Assessment Programme) safety test.

With five stars, the Volkswagen brand’s first compact SUV based on the innovative modular electric drive matrix (MEB) was awarded the top score.

Auditors gave the ID.4 good ratings on all criteria – for the protection of adult occupants, children and vulnerable road users, as well as in terms of assistance systems.

The scores in each area were:

  • Adult occupant: 93 per cent
  • Child occupant: 89 per cent
  • Vulnerable road users: 76 per cent
  • Safety assist: 85 per cent

Euro NCAP says the passenger compartment of the ID.4 remained stable in the frontal offset test, and showed good or adequate protection for all critical body regions of the driver and passenger. Good protection would be provided to the knees and femurs of occupants of different sizes, too, and in different sitting positions. The vehicle provided good protection to all critical body regions in both the side barrier and side pole tests, scoring maximum points.

The ID.4 has a centre-mounted airbag as standard to protect the driver and front passenger from hard mutual contact in a side crash, and Euro NCAP states it offers good protection for the front occupants’ heads. Tests on the front seats and head restraints showed good protection against whiplash injuries in rear-end collisions.

Head protection for pedestrians was good or adequate over most of the bonnet surface, according to Euro NCAP, while the bumper provided good protection to pedestrians' legs at all test locations. Protection of the pelvis was good or adequate at all points tested by Euro NCAP, too.

The ID.4’s autonomous emergency braking (AEB) system can detect pedestrians and cyclists - with Euro NCAP saying the system performed adequately, avoiding or mitigating a collision in most test scenarios.

The ID.4 has a speed assistance system as standard, as is a seatbelt reminder for all seating positions . A fatigue-detection system for driver alertness also warns if impaired driving is detected. Lane assistance alerts the driver to the car drifting out of lane and then corrects it, intervening more urgently in more critical scenarios.
