Some SUVs tend to be all show and no go nowadays. They get rugged styling and a high ride height, but none of the true off-road ability associated with the 4x4 class. On the other hand, there are SUV which are marvellous when put through tough terrain.
Taking this into account, it can sometimes be tricky to sort the real 4x4s from the ones with just the look. So, here’s five SUVs with proper off-road prowess…
Jeep Wrangler
The Wrangler is notoriously amazing off-road, and it’s an awesome go-anywhere vehicle. Not only does it look the part, with retro rugged styling that really stands out, but the car really lives up to the Jeep name, as well as the legacy and history of the legendary brand.
Land Rover Discovery
Land Rover is another manufacturer synonymous with 4x4s, and the Discovery is one of its best and most capable. It’s a hefty beast of an SUV with incredible off-road ability that can take on the most treacherous of terrains, as well as offering luxurious seating for seven.
Jaguar I-Pace
One SUV you may not expect to be a water wading off-roader is the all-electric Jaguar I-Pace. This surprisingly capable 4x4 provides emissions free motoring both on and off-road – it’s really quite tough too.
Honda CR-V
Honda’s CR-V tends to go under the radar when it comes to off-roaders, but it really shouldn’t as it makes mincemeat of the great outdoors. With all-wheel-drive fitted, it’s able to achieve impressive traction and plough through rough terrain.
Land Rover Defender
The Defender, like the Wrangler, is another name in the 4x4 hall of fame. It too features a retro-rugged design and has the ability to match. There’s not much you can throw at this thing that it can’t get through.
