If you’re into high performance cars then there’s no doubt, you’ll be a fan of the Audi RS sports family.

Why RS?

RS, just two small letters which signify a massive change, what do they mean? Sadly it’s a little bit dull really, they stand for ‘RennSport’, which in English means ‘rally sport’, it doesn’t seem adequate to describe these everyday supercars.

How did it begin?

The cars you’re probably most familiar with today are the Audi RS6 and RS4 Avant models; flying estate cars and that’s where it all began in 1994, turning the rather mundane Audi 80 estate into an unexpected powerhouse.

And it worked! The marriage of supercar performance with estate car space, for kids, dogs and luggage was a winning one and the Audi RS2 Avant, a rather work-a-day looking car spawned the RS models which we covet today.

Audi RS4 Avant

With the dawn of the millennium came the first RS you’d truly recognise as an everyday supercar, the Audi RS4 Avant. This car set the sport car world alight and demand for it was so great that Audi had to double the original the planned production run.

The latest Audi RS4 is a muscular beast, gently hinting at its horsepower, but at a glance still passable as an estate car. Of course the most import aspect of the RS4 lies hidden beneath the bonnet; its incredible V6 engine delivers 450PS and will catapult you from 0-62mph in pulse-raising 4.1 seconds. All this and it sticks to the road thanks to its Quattro all-wheel drive.

The interior is gorgeous with its hand-crafted quilted leather seats, accentuated with your choice of colour; of course there’s technology aplenty, as you’d expect, but it’s the sheer sumptuousness that sets it apart.

It is a car for all seasons; for families, for dogs, for fun, for work, for sheer pleasure.

Audi RS6

Two years later, Audi introduced the RS6; it was based on the Audi A6 and for the first time came in a saloon body as well the Avant estate. With a 4.2 litre V8 engine and two turbochargers giving an exhilarating 450hp this was no ordinary executive saloon/estate car.

The original instinct to make the RS an estate car was proved right, when the Avant body style outsold the saloon. In 2004 the RS6 plus made its debut, now with 480hp and its speed electronically limited to 175mph; by 2008 Audi were ready to build the most powerful RS6 to date, a V10 bi-turbo producing a whopping 580hp and with the ‘plus’ equipment edition this beast now reached 190mph.

It’s no wonder the Audi RS6 Avant remains the everyday supercar of choice; but, with a new Audi A6 due very soon, the availability of the current RS6 Avant is sadly, extremely limited.

You can be sure that when the new RS6 Avant arrives, it’ll cause a stir and the waiting list will lengthen!

 Audi RS3

Having produced a genuine supercar estate, Audi moved on to the hatchback. There were plenty out there purporting to be ‘hot hatches’, but with their pedigree Audi were never going to produce a car to compete with what was already on the market, they were going to create a whole new market and the supercar hatchback was born.

The Audi RS 3 is a mini-beast that will literally blow you away with its 2.5 litre turbocharged 5 cylinder engine; it produces 400PS and reaches 62mph in just 4.1 seconds.

The interior is brimming with technology including the Audi Virtual Cockpit and all the tech advances that Audi is so synonymous with; it’s also a thing of beauty, reflecting, as it does, the supercar nature of the engine.

Such is its popularity that Audi have no produced the RS3 in a saloon body style; same exceptional engine, but in a sleek saloon body. Both these amazing everyday supercars have their fans; all you need to do is choose the one for you.
