Cheapest cars to insure for young drivers revealed

A new survey has revealed which cars new drivers will find the cheapest to insure.

What are the cheapest cars to insure for young drivers?

  • Peugeot 107
  • Citroen C1
  • Toyota Aygo
  • Fiat 500
  • Vauxhall Corsa
  • Volkswagen Polo
  • Renault Clio
  • Ford Fiesta

Commissioned by Marmalade, an insurance company catering for younger and newer drivers, the survey also revealed the difference that having a black box installed on your car can have on an insurance premium. That includes reducing the chances of having an accident in their first six months on the road by 73 per cent.

The survey revealed the Peugeot 107 was the cheapest car for drivers aged 17 to 24, averaging a premium of £1,114. The French supermini has a relatively low power output, which means the premium is reduced compared with rivals as a result.

That was followed by the Citroen C1, which had an average insurance cost of £1,181, and the Toyota Aygo at £1,225. Both of these models are based on the same platform as the 107, so these low prices comes as no surprise.

Next on the list were the popular Fiat 500 (£1,281 average premium), Vauxhall’s Corsa (£1,342) and the Polo from Volkswagen (£1,347). The Renault Clio and Ford Fiesta followed those on the list, averaging £1,362 and £1,398 respectively.

Crispin Moger, Marmalade chief executive, said: “Insurance costs can be significant for young drivers, so we always encourage them to consider how much this will be before purchasing their vehicle.

“They might feel like they have bagged a bargain with their car, but if insurance costs are high – for example if it is lacking modern safety features – it can be a false economy.”
