Celebrities You Never Knew Didn't Drive

Celebrities You Never Knew Didn't Drive

One of the perks of celebrity is driving expensive cars but many of the rich and famous choose not to. Check out list of celebs you never knew didn’t drive!

Once we've passed our driving test's, most of us take driving for granted.

But what if you’ve never taken a driving test, or gained a licence but never used it?

A lot of people choose not to opt for the expense of owning, insuring and running a car, instead spending their pennies on public transport or relying on the generosity of family and friends to chauffeur them around.

But if money were no object, how would you choose to get around? Plenty of the rich and famous prefer not to drive themselves and if you can afford to hire a driver, why wouldn’t you? Although frankly, at Swansway Group, we’re a little puzzled as to why, with so many beautiful cars on offer, you wouldn’t enjoy driving one of them.

In 2020, there are an estimated 40.4 million cars on UK roads (source: best-selling-cars.com) and 49.4 million driving licence holders (source: DVLA). Even accounting for those who share cars, we figure there are still a significant number of people who hold a licence but don’t drive.

Don’t worry, if you don’t drive for whatever reason, you’re in great company:

Freddie Mercury from Queen singing into a micrphone with his eyes closed and one arm raised

Despite owning a black Mercedes S-Class and a 1976 Rolls Royce Silver Shadow, rock band Queen’s frontman didn’t ever learn to drive. Perhaps prompting the 1978 hit Bicycle Race.

Rumour has it that Freddie did take a couple of driving lessons but got bored (yawn) and so didn’t continue. He instead relied on a bevvy of chauffeurs to ferry him to gigs and social engagements until his untimely death in 1991.

Even though Freddie didn’t ever drive it, his Rolls Royce sold at auction in 2013 for an astonishing £74,000. We hope that a fan is at least enjoying being chauffeur-driven as the legendary musician once was.

Sir David Attenborough holding a green frog on his hand

Naturalist and documentary maker, David has reached the ripe old age of 90 without having to drive himself. He reached legal driving age in an era when most people lived and worked in the same locality, and if you had to travel, public transport was the norm.

Sir David says that his aversion to taking charge of a vehicle is not due to his love of the environment but simply the fact that he just hates driving.

It’s fitting then that in 2016 had a £200m nature research boat named after him, instead of the suggested Boaty McBoatface! When it is completed in 2019, David might at least have a chance of steering the vessel without having to first gain his driving licence.

Robbie Williams singing into a microphone with a blackk coat, jeans, black t-shirt and big blue tie

Even though he once bought 5 cars in one day, the 42-year-old ex-Take That star, who last year spent £32m on a mansion in Beverly Hills, has yet to learn to drive.

After joining the UK’s most famous boy band since The Beatles at the age of 16 and being quickly catapulted into a superstar lifestyle, getting a driving licence has just never been on Robbie’s list of priorities.

As a Formula One fan, Robbie admits to hold some regret that he hasn’t ever learned to drive. Now married with 2 children, he’s become used to taking taxis and chauffeur driven rides everywhere.

Ricky Gervais in a black t-shirt on stage

When Jeremy Clarkson left Top Gear, Ricky Gervais immediately discounted himself from the running for a new presenter because he can’t drive!

Admitting to enjoying a tipple or two, Ricky sensibly leaves all the driving to his chauffeur, stating that even before he became famous (and rich) he found the tube a convenient enough way to get around.

His lack of driving ability hasn’t prevented Ricky from clinching the lead role in an Audi A3 advert, nor appearing in Jerry Seinfeld’s Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee where he reveals that he knows nothing about cars and is a nervous passenger.

Christina Aguilera with red lipstick smiling at an awards red carpet

Christina Aguilera says she doesn’t drive because she is terrified of running over a desperate paparazzi. We think that it might just be because a chauffeur driven car increases her celebrity factor by a great deal!

Our theory is supported by the fact that the singer has in fact possessed a driving licence since she was 21 but just doesn’t use it. Still no excuse for once being spotted allowing her boyfriend to drive with young daughter sitting on his knee.

Oh, the things that a diva gets away with!

Kate Beckinsale smiling

The British actress has lived in Los Angeles for over a decade and still not taken a driving lesson. The sprawling city has limited public transport (not that it’s the done thing for celebrities in LA), causing Kate to complain that she is virtually a prisoner in her own home.

Reluctant to take a driving test for fear of a few failed attempts, Kate’ll just have to wait until her teenaged daughter passes her own test and becomes her personal driver. In the meantime, let’s all have a whip round for an Uber cab for the isolated Underworld star!

Noel Gallagher playing guitar and singing into a microphone in a white shirt

Another musician who has been too busy rocking and rolling to learn to drive.

Celebrating his 50th birthday next year and having recently launched Supersonic, a docufilm about the successes and trials of 1990s Britpop band, Oasis, Noel acknowledges that he is often embarrassed about his lack of driving skill.

Then, he looks at other drivers and is grateful that he doesn’t have to worry about the stress of avoiding pedestrians and other cars on the road. Surely a case of Definitely, Maybe! Noel Gallagher has recently spoken about having driving lessons at the age of 53.

Queen Elizabeth II wearing pearl earrings, pearl necklace and cream coloured hat and blazer with a gold broach

There’s no bigger celebrity than the Queen, who makes it onto our list not because she doesn’t drive but because she doesn’t need a driving licence to do so!

It seems that if you own the whole country, no one is going to complain when you take to the road in a Land Rover. After learning to drive in the Women’s Auxiliary Territorial Service during World War II and regularly driving herself through her various royal estates, the Queen is no doubt a very accomplished driver.

Perhaps if these non-driving celebrities saw the great range of new and used vehicles on offer at Swansway Group dealerships, they’d be tempted to drive. Whether you already have a licence or are learning to drive, pop into one of our showrooms to find a car that you’ll be desperate to drive...you never know who you might bump into.
