But how do they compare?

The SUV segment has gone from strength to strength over recent years, with all manner of manufacturers introducing their own high-riding models to appeal to drivers who like to sit a little higher up. Both the Jaguar F-Pace and Land Rover Discovery Sport have added to this with a distinct amount of premium appeal as well as loads of technology and plenty of off-road prowess, too.

Interior

Jaguar F-Pace Interior

Both cars here major on comfort and quality. The F-Pace has recently been updated and one of the biggest changes is the fitment of a whole new infotainment system. This was one of the F-Pace’s weaknesses previously, but the new version is comprehensively better. It’s easy to use, good looking and intuitive. Elsewhere, the F-Pace’s cabin is just as comfortable as before, while its boot stands at an impressive 650 litres. Land Rover Discovery Sport Interior

The Discovery Sport has also been updated and, as you’d expect given the Jaguar Land Rover family tie-up, benefits from many of the enhancements made to the F-Pace. It too uses a new screen, which is far better than the one fitted to previous generations. The Discovery Sport takes a slightly more rugged approach to the interior, however, with more robust materials and go-anywhere feel. Remember too, that the Discovery Sport is available with space for seven, while boot space stands at 841 litres with the third row of seats folded down.

Exterior

Jaguar F-Pace ExteriorBoth cars exhibit the kind of premium-yet-chunky look that people shopping in this market are looking for. The F-Pace takes a more refined approach, with a large front grille and sharp LED headlights matching the equally streamlined rear lights which incorporate a design similar to that found on the F-Type sports car.

Land Rover Discovery Sport ExteriorThe Discovery Sport has been tweaked in design too. It’s been brought closer into line with the larger Discovery, with distinctive headlights feed into a wide, sharp grille. Despite offering space for seven people, the Discovery Sport doesn’t look overly large in the metal thanks to sleek styling and a sharp rear section.

Engines

As you might expect from premium SUVs, both the Jaguar and Land Rover come accompanied by a series of petrol and diesel engines - though new plug-in hybrid setups have also been thrown into the mix recently. With the Discovery Sport, you’ve got the choice of a petrol or diesel - both of which are two litres in capacity - and they utlise mild-hybrid technology for better efficiency too. They’re available in a variety of power outputs, too. Then, there’s the plug-in hybrid. It combines a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine with an electric battery and motors, delivering up to 135mpg and an electric-only range of up to 38 miles.

The F-Pace’s engine line-up largely mirrors that of the Discovery Sport, with 2.0-litre mild-hybrid engines - in both petrol and diesel - making up the bulk of the choices. Again, a plug-in hybrid features in the list, bringing impressively low running costs and the option of electric-only running. The range is topped by the F-Pace SVR, which packs a 5.0-litre supercharged V8 making 542bhp and allows the car to go from 0-60mph in under four seconds.

Specifications

Land Rover Discovery SportThere are plenty of specifications to choose from with both the F-Pace and the Discovery Sport, with each car delivering plenty of standard equipment from the off. The Jaguar, even in entry-level trims, brings 18-inch alloy wheels, an 11.4-inch central touchscreen and front and rear parking sensors. It means that even from the very off, you’re getting a whole host of features to play with.

Jaguar F-Pace SVR

It’s the same story with the Discovery Sport. Automatic headlights are included on all cars as standard, as well as LED headlights and two-zone climate control. You get the updated 10-inch infotainment display too, which incorporates both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
