Carlisle Cathedral is one of the jewels of North West England and after standing on the border with Scotland for almost 900 years, it has a lively story to tell.

Carlisle Cathedral might not be as well-known as other medieval landmarks but it certainly is a delight to many visitors. It is worth popping in just to see the featured blue ceiling overspread with gold stars and the amazing stained glass windows and to take a step back in history!

Carlisle Castle is a stunning medieval fortress that has watched over the city of Carlisle for over nine centuries.

Hadrian’s Wall is the best preserved and most formidable of Rome’s great frontiers.

It is a long 84 miles of glorious walking through rugged moorland, rolling fields and dynamic urban landscape. There are circular walks and shorter trails that have been devised to cater for all abilities (so you don’t not have to walk the whole 84 miles!!)

The walk is a great opportunity to see this wonderful piece of history that dates back to AD130.  

Watchtree Nature ReserveNr Wiggonby, Carlisle CA5 6NL

At Watchtree Nature Reserve there are lots of activities for everyone to enjoy. With wide open spaces you can enjoy quiet and peaceful walks in the stunning woodlands and a helpful calendar listed on their website detailing which animals are most popularly sighted throughout the year, such as Mute Swans, Buzzards and Roe Deer, Watchtree is a lovely day out for all the family.

There are also a number of regular events and activities that happen here each month and thanks to its ideal location, Watchtree is also a prime spot for both amateur and professional photographers too!

Bewcastle museumBewcastle, Carlisle CA6 6PS

This museum is designed to educate you on the village of Bewcastle, an isolated village steeped in Roman and Border history.

The church, farm and castle occupy the site of a Roman out post fort which guarded the Maiden Way, the main Roman road north from Birdoswald on Hadrian’s Wall. Bewcastle Museum also bears a runic inscription and Celtic knotwork which dates to around the 7th or 8th century, not to mention it’s on top of an ancient Roman fort!
