Flagship performance model will arrive later in the year

Volkswagen is set to introduce a new version of the Golf R with as much as 328bhp, a new leaked document has suggested.

An Instagram post by user ‘chocespias’ has revealed a number of Mk8 Golf variants due to arrive throughout the course of the year, with the base model set to arrive in the UK imminently.

Exact dates of an arrival have yet to be confirmed, but the R again with play a role as the flagship model in the hatchback’s line-up. A low-resolution image of the car hints at an aggressively-designed front bumper and large alloy wheels, though changes beyond that prove hard to make out this point.

It’s possible this Volkswagen Golf R will use the same 2.0-litre powerplant as the outgoing model, and potentially with a mild-hybrid powertrain to give it a power boost. Industry rumours have suggested a 400bhp+ version could also be in the works to rival the Mercedes-AMG A45 S, though solid evidence of this has yet to emerge.

A GTI hot hatch is due as well, along with a more potent TCR variant in a similar vein to one of the same name on the previous generation Golf. Alongside those, a diesel GTD and petrol-electric GTE hybrid will continue to be offered.
